Prince fans agree - AFO's probably the best shit of the dec.

AFO is a solid album with two fatal flaws. Beginning with of the absence of Buffalo Man on album cover…. and the song Black Crow which is cringe inducing and horrible. Anyone with legitimate gripes with J’s voice likely has a problem with the inconsistency of it.

Yeah, I have a problem with the consistency of his voice on that album...

It's consistently bad.

I think I said this before, but on the first two albums his voice really enhanced the songs... mainly because they sounded so pure to me. Half the Man is just sublime. Then you have him singing on Corner of the Earth, and it's a whole other story. Little L is a pretty good song that has one bit that always gets me... when J tries to hit the high note in the "why does it have to be liiiike this" or the "love you loooove you" part. Never sounded right. Sounds too scratchy/scraggly or something.

One thing I wondered when I first heard AFO is if JK chose to go the electronic route for the album in order to cover up his poor performing voice.

Aside from the vocals & the unsatisfactory production, I think AFO is a really good album. The musicianship & song compositions were top notch, and I would love to hear an instrumental version of the album. Main Vein was the only song that I feel had a sloppy structure. I still don't understand it to this day. It's all build up & then a really quick release at the end. Is it supposed to be a metaphor for sex?! It's just nonsensical!

I've always thought music has a lot to do with sex.

All songs build up to a natural climax, and wind down.
Some songs more profound and metaphorical.

Jamiroquai definitely.
Tool and Prince also great examples.

Yeah, a lot of stuff follows that pattern... movies, stories, discoveries, wars...

It's interesting if you think about it. Life is just a bunch of repeating patterns.

What? That song has an awesome structure! It's meant to be a mixture of how house and disco tracks build up, and I think that all the build-up and tension that lead into the euphoric, uplifting final two minutes is genius. It creates a swell of anger then intense pleasure.

It doesn't do anything for me. It's too unsatisfying, imo. Too much tension, and not enough release. If they had extended the song to 7-8 minutes, balanced out the tension & release, and done something like... tension/release - bridge - tension/release it would've been better. I always get a feeling of... 'That's it?' when I listen to this song. I like the instrumental more than the album version, though. The song has top notch musicianship on it.

And I would praise the heavens if I could ever get the album instrumental of Do It like We Used To Do. Man I love that song.
