Absolutely cracking stage decoration.
It seems like the feathered headgear will be Jay's iconic headgear for this RDLS Era. _________________ 'White gets two and black gets five...years!' - EONPLE. |

Here is my review... not really complete, but that's what popped up in my messy mind. I had only 2 hours of sleep and my little girl keeps me away from my mac... but I know you all are waiting for details...
So, here we go:
Wow, what a night! Jamiroquai are back! Yes, they are!! Back with a pocket full of rock, dust, lights, stars and surprises, new arrangements, an amazing stage design, lots of visual effects, with the brass section we had been longing for...
You could notice that it was just the second gig of the tour - not everything seemed to be running perfectly round. Here and there a bit edgy, but that made it even more pleasant in a way. Anyways, for me this was a well earned gig after a long period of waiting, so I wasn't expecting much, just the thrill to see them on stage again.
I was a little bit prepared because I had seen pictures of the stage in Zuerich. I hadn't seen many videos, just 2 or 3, so I didn' really know what I had to expect musicially.
The stage looked amazing!! Although from the front row it was a strange perspective - probably not the best, because the planets were hanging over us, and this didn't really give us the complete view of the whole stage setting. But it was great anyways, to see the different colours of lights reflecting from the planets, and the combination with the visual effects on the big screen behind the stage.
Sometimes it was hard to follow the pictures and I sometimes noticed, that I was only busy to watch the musicians instead of watching the "stories" on the screen. Maybe it was too much of visual effects... for example at the song "Travelling" you could see a very fast drive on the streets from the perspective of the driver... lots of curves, overtaking other cars... kind of hectic. First 30 seconds I thought it was a nice idea to underline the feeling of the song, but then it became difficult to focus. Couldn't watch it any longer.
Maybe I will take more attention to the videos on the screen when I am at the gig in Berlin. Yesterday I did concentrate more on the music, closed my eyes when it was too much light and flashes and purely enjoyed the new things in the music.
There was so much to detect in the music... just wow! The new songs sound great live! The videos on youtube do them no justice, in my opinion. Just a bit pity that Jay decided to skip Hurtin and wanted Deeper Underground instead.
(I later learned that the band wasn't keen on playing Deeper either... Rob even thought the gig is over after finishing the song...lol...naah, not really...haha!)
Yeah, but anyways, I could even enjoy Deeper Underground, because it was newly arranged and it was not at the end but in the middle of the set.
So, we got to hear some of the new songs, which I really enjoyed! I was surprised that they did Angeline. That was one of a lot happy moments!
And then again some classics like Little L, Love Foolosophy and Canned Heat... I think all "old" songs were newly arranged, with new parts, different choruses and so on. Very fresh to hear for an old fans ear.
I notice that it is difficult to describe the new arrangements... I am having a mess in my head at the moment. I just remember that I really loved the new parts, especially Pauls crazy bassline in Little L! Awesome!! Also Canned Heat was amazing and When you gonna learn! Use The Force was different as well.
What else can I say... Ah yes, they messed up a little bit "Travelling"... I guess nobody would have noticed it, if not Rob had made funny faces...haha!! He later told me that Jay was singing a wrong part and half of the band was playing something different. It indeed sounded a bit strange, but first I thought it was another different experiment or something....haha. But Rob embarraced face gave me the clue that something was not alright. But they found smoothly back on track and I doubt that lot of people noticed the mistake.
In a later chat with Rob he told me that he is kinda confused with all that new parts they rehearsed, then Jay changing suddenly the choruses again. Not so easy..... haha!! He was not completely happy with his performance... made some little mistakes, Jay's entry was not always right... to sum it up: there is some need to work on the set, in his opinion.
Well, all I can say is, it was anyways an amazing great mindblowing gig. For me, a perfect come back to touring. And if they are even able to improve some little details, it will be even better.
By the way, Jay was not exactly talkative... one song followed another, fluent passages... he just said "Hello Hamburg", announced a few song titles, and that was it. Later I saw that he was drinking a pot of tea on stage... after the gig I heard that he was afraid of loosing his voice. So, maybe a bit ill?
White Knuckle Ride was the only song I would have skipped... Jay couldn't reach the high notes, unfortunately. ("It's not so easy to control")... but maybe that's just me. The crowd seemed to be happy anyways.
I met some nice people in the queue and front row. Maybe they are reading now... Come and register and say hello!!!
Also, I am sorry that we couldn't meet Kasper (Emmanuel). When you texted me you were in the blue room, we were still outside, waiting to go in. Strange. I kept having problems with the connection. No internet for my iphone, also sms couldn't be sent several times. Hope you enjoyed the gig as I did!
I was lucky to meet the boys after the gig (Rob, Paul, Matt & Derrick). We were discussing a bit the gig, the different versions of the songs, the little mess and Rob's many mistakes....haha.. naaaah, it was not that bad. Kidding of course!
We were altogether moaning about Jay's decision to do Deeper...haha!!!
When I said I will be in Berlin again, they said: alright, we will put Deeper at the end again for you then... grrrrr
We had a good laugh!
Oh, yes, and another juicy detail I don't wanna keep secret from you:
Did you know that Paul has a luxuriant crop of hair? Usually he manages to hide his "fur" under his cool shirts... but look what I saw yesterday!!!
(Going to upload pics soon. Keep checking!!)
(I hope he is not angry with me, that I let you know...) |

much appreciated Meike
seems there must have been a no filming policy there as nothing is on youtube. That seems to be the case at alot of venues thesedays as they are really cracking down on it. _________________

Meike -you are funny! Great review!
Paul -is that your real hair? No way! That's one hairy MF! That just moved him up to the most interesting member.
Funny to hear Rob concerned with the changes! I mean they've just been pre-touring performing songs a certain way. Hard to jump in and change them. Front row is great to see the band and their expressions! The screens are mainly for those that can't see the stage!
Either way, they will be great even with mistakes! Well, at least, for those of you who get to see them.
Awesome songs, awesome stage, awesome brass! |
