Rock Dust Light Star, the album, is pretty inconsistent with the sound quality.
Some songs sound good (White Knuckle Ride, Smoke and Mirrors), other sound bad (Hey Floyd, Two Completely Different Things). |

Yeah, they also fell victims of the "loudness war" that has been going on with the recordings and producers... _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

Yep. I wish they recorded everything in Chillington this time.
Synkronized still sounds perfect to me.
Canned Heat is a great example of multiple instruments and vocals together that doesn't sound overstuffed or anything like that. Every bit of musical information can be heard. I don't know how much work went into that track alone, but it sounds absolutely perfect. |

Back then there was Toby Smith, I'm very sure he had a direct influence on the sound of the first four albums, and how the tracks were mixed, mastered and stuff, even more than Jay I dare to say... _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

Nice to hear which songs are considered "good".
It seems like there are more criticisms these days.

maybe they should just switch to ribbon mics

Toby & Zender were essential. The band is something else entirely without them. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not the same. |

It's interesting that all these songs are written by JK and Matt. No other band members? or do they get credit for adding in the instruments? |
Royalties. Less contributions means more money for J. It's why Zender left. |

I really wish it was that simple, altough ribbon microphones are perfect for hall performance (where it makes great use of reverb and feedback). But there's many more variables in question _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

If you're interested, here's Dynamic Range Database site where you can compare different Jamiroquai releases and formats as how they comply on this loudness war we are living in.

Oh yes! I keep an eye on that everytime I do some research about the jazz recordings I hold. Pretty nice database, I wished there was some way to make this process of catalog automated... _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |

Those Sony expanded album remasters would've been better if they hadn't squashed the sound. RotSC went from a 12 average dynamic range (1994 release) to an 8 average dynamic range for the remaster.
It would be really awesome if Sony released Hi res uncompressed editions. Maybe as an SHM or SACD release. Or even just HDtracks. |

The problem with these mediums is that they're mostly an audiophile niche. This is easy to fix with better mastering. A good mastered track in an mp3 file easily trashes a badly mastered hi-res audio file. =( _________________ At the speed of cheeba, you and I go deeper... |
