Personally, I don't see that much of a departure from what they've done before. Lots of synths, strings, backing singers and disco touches were all over Cosmic Girl 21 years ago too, and I wasn't around but I doubt there was this kind of disparity of opinions between that one and let's say Revolution 1993. So that's not a compelling argument against this album.
I don't think the music has changed all that much. People have.

Why? Because nearly everything on this album has been done by the band before but better.

I'd be interested to see you put together a list to this end. Reasonable minds can differ on the subject of whether the earlier material is better than Automaton, but I am pretty confident that you can't put together a list to back up the point being argued above.

listening automaton in a live video make me feel is not virtual insanity 2, but more like RDLS(the song) second part, i mean, is not so melancholic, but is very deep and weird at the same time.

summer girl could be a bond theme, shake it on is weird at first listen, i feel like many of the songs of this album are more sinkronized than''daft punk'ed

even FJLIS sounds common with the new style, and is not new, is a mix of classic synths and some experimental sounds.

btw, i don't get why many critize RDLS , it wasn't the best, but many clues from that songs are there and here...to me was a transition in my life, also a album about transitions...so is not a sad album, is more...the opposite of automaton, this album is more like go further, RLDS was more like a step sure.

edit3-2400 post, now i must get married and sing funk somewhere xd

i think this is interesting and fun. i've tried to do a list like this one you ask for.
As for most of this thread's incoming topics, i thik they don't belong to "jamiroquai news" anymore, so i've opened a thread in "jamiro-talk" about this:

After a number of listens, I like the album a lot more now. I think it peaks around track 6 or 7, and goes downhill from there. I would've actually liked a slow ballad to end the album, a la Spend a Lifetime or Half The Man. As it is, the whole album is "up" which is a good thing I guess.

What REALLY strikes me is the similarity in sound and approach to AFO. Sure, AFO was more varied (Corner of the Earth, Black Crow) and had more electro influences. But stuff like Little L and Main Vein would've sat very nicely on the new album, and tracks from the new album would've sat very nicely on AFO.

And everyone is raving about Automaton at the moment (the press are all giving it good reviews, "Jamiroquai is back!" and all that). Raving about an album that harks back to a 16 year old album.

Does that suggest AFO was ahead of it's time?

The only similarity with AFO are the electro-disco songs. We could say Little L is a disco song with some modern touches, as well as Superfresh.

The nice thing about AFO is that it also had these bossa songs (Black Crow, Pictures of my life) which this album doesn't. Instead, we have a number of strange songs like We can do it and Dr buzz that are quite difficult to classify, altogether with Summer Love and Something About You, which I find similar to Two Completely Different Things, somehow more similar to what Jamiroquai has been doing lately.

The Electro part.. probably. But they were able to do Disco since Sync (Canned Heat), something I suspect Jay in particular is very efficient at.

Which one is more electronic to you? AFO or Automaton?

To me, AFO had a big chance to win, if they have included Titan AE, but without that song, Automaton is probably more electronic than AFO

Supersonic, a song that not only was anti-Jamiroquai; it also got released as a single.

I can think of few things more suited to being a Jamiroquai single than a stonking great bassy digeridoo party track. Each to their own and all that, but I can't see anything anti about it at all, it's music they made and not a million miles from Deeper Underground, which did rather well for them Cool

When i was litening to the last Album he says that is amazing how jamiroquai are able to do at the same time commercial/quality music.
He think that Jay is a genious because it's not easy to make stuff that everyone could enjoy

I think he's got a very good way of looking at it Smile

Dynamite (which I know is not particularly popular here, but I think it was a bold move that very few artist are able to do)

I love Dynamite. TWM, Synkronized and AFO I pick and choose tracks, Dynamite I invariably listen from end to end in a way I hadn't done since the first two. And I'm doing that again with Automaton, RDLS was another pick and choose for me - no bad thing, but it speaks of how Dynamite really works as an album for me Smile

There's much to love on RDLS I think Smile

Having said that, I do think that if some songs of the golden days were to be part of Automaton, they'd be way more criticised than they were in their days. I'm thinking about songs like Whatever It Is I Just Can't Stop, Didgin' Out and even Light Years: I always skipped the verse of Light Years and went straight for that gorgeous chorus, much like I do with the ending of Something About You now.

I think these songs were probably very criticized at the time. Most things look better from the distance.

C´mon guys! this album is fuc$%&/ amazing!
by far its my favourite now (with the exception of We Can Do It xD)
and I'v been seeing a lot of good reviews and critics from a lot of people in the media, facebook and the radio.
According to the Official Jamiroquai Facebook page:

"We’re looking at a good handful of #1’s around the world"

I'm soooooo happy and excited about Jamiroquai right now

And to me, that's what it comes down to: good songs. That's the essential difference between Cosmic Girl and Summer Girl.

But what if one song is not actually better than the other..? And Summer Girl, is considered “not as good” because we have already listened to something as good before…and we were expecting that same sensation that Cosmic Girl caused when we first listened to it? (I think in my case it was more like 10 years ago and not 20 years ago)

I think what made the earlier songs “so much better” was that it was fresh and new and unique and we didn’t know anything like that before. Jamiroquai moved on, and new generations were inspired by them and started to do more similar kind of music. This way it gets more difficult to cause that surprise.

It’s difficult, not impossible. At least for me Automaton was a great surprise! I think people are comparing Automaton to AFO, not just because of the electronic sounds… I believe it’s because it is Jamiroquai’s most ambitious reinvention since AFO.

So yeah… I think music changes, and our perception towards it changes as well.
