health problems
Hello everyone. As I keep on coming back to the old records it always amazes me how definitely has Jay’s voice changed. He doesn’t sing so high as he used to, hardly ever uses falsetto and his sound gets more and more croaky. That makes me worry about his larynx. And I know what I’m saying as I study vocalistic and singing is my profession. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the guy, but…. When he gonna learn? I heard that he had a visit to the doctor with problems with throat… |

Hello,
Well your kind of right Whoopiee, but that's expected from such a wide range vocalist like JK . But there were other factors too, JK admitted to a cocaine addicition during the "Synkronized" era of the band, and his doctor told him if he didn't give it up, he would completely lose this singing voice. Thank goodness JK took his advice, but when you think about it, JK is the only vocalist of the "Class of 92" British music invasion to still have his singing voice nearly intact. I mean, look at Liam Gallagher of Oasis, he has got NO singing voice anymore, more a grumble comes out of his mouth when he sings, you know, like Bruce Springsteen.... , I kid "The Boss"! But if JK properly exercises his singing voice each day, then he will stay the dominant force in the UK music scene for a very long time. Thanks for listening and Peace!
Sincerely,

Hello there,
Yes, you're right whoopiee, I've noticed that too over this last years, specially during the Pori Jazz Festival, I think is that one where he sounds with aphony.
But as much like Brent said, he still has an amazing voice... he definetely improve his vocals on the Montreux Jazz Festival 2003... but in those 30 seconds of Black Devil Car there's a part -if you listen carefuly- where he sounds like in the Pori Festival again...
And don't forget he is older now! I mean, he started in 1993 and now 12 years later! But I think we don't have to worry about Jay's voice... well..........

In the whole I agree that the voice has changed a bit...but I have been to the concert in Lörrach which was just the day before Pori. His voice was very good there and he had no problems with the songs.
Later when I heard the Pori concert first I thought he sounded quite hoarse, very much trying not to loose his voice at all. Couldn't believe that he sounds like that only a day later. May be he got some cold...it was that hot summer and in Lörrach we still had 30°C around midnight and were sweating like hell
Another thought: On that flight to Pori right after Lörrach concert he got not much sleep, drank too much and surely smoked a lot..
But still today I like that Pori tracks. I have to admit he is a very professional live singer...even when he got a bad day with his voice...trying to keep the voice very low to get through the whole concert gives some of the song a special charme |

But i think some songs are very difficult to Jay to sing... for example Virtual Insanity and Love Foolosophy, when he says in Love Foolosophy: "...previous illusions that...." just see the Fashion Rocks complete and you will know what i'm talking about... and in Virtual Insanity of Live in Verona.... , but remember he's singing since 1992 with Jamiroquai all the time... so... _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

Hello there,
Yes! That is absolutely true. I noticed that in Love Foolosophy's 'previous illusions that...', but not only Fashion Rocks but in the Live in Verona concert (the one without Beverley Knight), check that out!!!!!!
I agree, he is a professional live singer, and even thought he sings a lot (I mean, when they extend each song, Jay sings on it until the end -know what I mean?) like in the Pori festival, I still like how he sings in there, specially on 'Butterfly'.

That's true!!! Diego remember Soul Education of the Montreux Jazz Festival, that song is 7 or 8 minutes long.. as I remember.... and he sang all the complete song... until the last second... and remember the long songs like Alright, Corner of the Earth.... but i think Jay still hav a nice voice... a great voice i can say... he's 35 years old (not so far for becoming 36) and he has a lot of time singing... so... _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

As I said I truly admire Jay, I have seen no better "live performer". His songs are mostly extremely hard to sing and what he did in Verona is amazing... I have to admit that sometimes he was out of tune (especially in Corner of the Earth) but, what is more important, I don't care at all!!! That didn't spoil my "state of ecstasy". And it was such a looong concert and He did it! singing all the time, moving, in pouring rain- extreme conditions.
BUT... He must know the facts, that smoking, partying, drinking alcohol and using drugs have horrible affect on the larynx, also, he surely can hear this. This is the place where I could post another subject: Is Jay RESPONSIBLE?
Well, I guess, that is a rethorical question...

Everybody is responsible for every single action done. I think Jay perfectly knows what is bad or good for his health...as all of us. But sometimes, unfortunately, there are some situations in which it's difficult say: " No, thx", especially in surroundings like music, fashion.....another world, surely. _________________

Hi !!
yes i agree with diego... he seems to be a professional singer... as you can see on the verona dvd.... he warms up his body.... he warms up his voice.... and hey... of course smoking isn´t " advantageous" for a clear voice...and of course a voice doesn´t sound the same every day .....and he ´s ooovvveerr 10 years on the road....
but i still love his voice.... _________________
