- I've played drums for 17 years

I don't really practice any instrument but sometimes I like to play my doumbek(spelling?). My boyfriend has been a drummer for 24 years. He taught himself since he was 3 but took some lessons in high school. Right now he plays in 2 bands, teaches lessons full-time, and is writing a book(a lesson book for other drummers). He's pretty damn good. He plays all kinds of percussion too and sometimes I play with him. But I was thinking of getting some turn tables this summer! They would be cool!

He's a great great great drummer.... he's not human..
Have you ever heard Dream Theatre? It's one of his bands, it's contemporary metal, but it's really great... I have some songs and I'm like  when I listen to them! lol
And Derrick McKenzie is soooo funky, I love him

For me, DT and Mike Portnoy don't take part in the musical sphere... It's only technics and this music is awful...
Indeed, Mike is very good, he can put 1200 beats in a second, but it's only technics, not harmony. Listen to DT, it's the same thing, they change the tempo ten or twenty times during the song. It's very boring to listen to this type of music for me.
Sometimes, it's 100 times more musical a drummer (or any musician) who plays just one note which gives you goosebumps than 36000 notes just to show he's the fastest drummer...
Anyway... that's my tastes.

I agree. It's not how big or how many drums your kit has, its how good you can play a rhthym ---no matter if you have 4 or 40 drums on the kit.

when i was a teenager i was fond of dave weckl, (drummer from
chick corea band) i bought his albums and have his 2 video schools

Well, as a Jazz drummer, I have a great knowledge on drummers, and I can tell you, Portnoy is good, but there are better ppl, who play with one bass, one tom and one floor tom...and only three cymbals....
Take Peter Erskine, for example, he is one of the best jazz drummers ever, better even than Gadd....Jack DeJohnette is also a terrific drummer....i could continue naming ppl, Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, narada michael walden, Max roach, Bill Stewart, Trilok Gurtu, Alex acuña, gene krupa, phily jo jones, lenny white, art blakey, andré ceccarelli, omar hakim, lionel hampton, jeff hamilton, airto moreira, elvin jones....there are many many many drummers, who in my opinion leave portnoy, and while on the subject, Neil Peart, to shame...
When talking about rock, we have virtuoso's, such as Mitch Mitchell, Ginger baker, John Bonham, terry Bozzio, carmine appice, stewart copeland, chester thompson, vinnie colaiuta, don brewer, cozy powell, keith moon...
All you have to do is research, and you will see beyond Dream Theater, or Rush....and you needn't look far...

Weckl was the drummer for Chick's 80's Elektric band...
however, the glory days of chick carreer, after being with Miles Davis, were accompanies by drummers TOny Williams, and especially, Lenny White, drummer for the famous Return To Forever...

For me, the drummer who gives me goosebumps is Stewart Copeland of Police.
In France, we've got a very good drummer too : Cyril Atef (he played with -M- and so many other good artists...)
Anyway, every professionnal drummers are very good...

Stewart Copeland from the police is veeeeeery good..
one of my favs 
yeah, Mike Portnoy is only technics but DT players are very good musicians.. anyway, he's not my fav, it's Jose Pasillas from Incubus... have you ever heard Incubus? this guy is very good, not only technic... I recommend you to listen "Sick Sad Little World", "The Warmth"... well, a long listing, lol.. it's not funky, but I heard him playing funky and I fell in love.. lol..

yeh i say the same, Mike Portnoy is a great drummer and he use technics, right, but he is not my favorite. My favorite drummer is Sonny Emory great drummer, isn't he?

Well, where do i start...
I am predominantly a trumpet player (for 10ish years) and play lead trumpet at the Portland State University Jazz Lab Band. I have played guitar for about 6 or so years with bass a close 4. Ive played drums for about 2 years now and have just started getting into playing keyboards after taking many a class on it.
Apart from playing I also remix/compose/mash-up whatever I can get my hands on. Im interning at a local studio as well as going through PSU's RAMP (Recording Audio Music Production) program as well. I want to someday be a top producer/artist and be able to play all the instruments above on my albums/work (Like Prince).
Whew... that does it I guess. |
