The Jamiroquai-DVD and the US-Problem...
okay, here we go:
The Jamiroquai-DVD that is available at this point (Europe, Australia) will not play on a US-DVD-Player.
There are two reasons:
1. The Area-Code
European and australian dvds have the area-code 2, while the US and Canada have area-code 1. So unless you have a multinorm dvd-player or a multinorm dvd-drive in your computer the dvd will not run on your US-system
2. Pal/NTSC - 50Hz/60Hz
the european tv's use the PAL-system to show the pictures on the screen, while the US uses the NTSC-system. the PAL-system is running with 25 frames per seconds, divided into 50 half-pictures (50 Hz) shown every second. The NTSC-system is running with 30 frames per seconds (well, 29,97 to be exact), divided into 60 half-pictures (60 Hz) shown every second.
So even if you have a multinorm-dvd-player, you also have to have a PAL-capable tv in order to be able to watch the DVD.
if you're running a US-ntsc-dvd on a pal-only-tv you will only get a black and white-picture. if you're running a european-pal-dvd on a ntsc-only-tv you probably will get no picture at all.
Copying the DVD to tape
Well, first of all it's illegal to make copies of the dvd unless is for your personal use!!!!
anyway it's the same with videotapes as with dvds (pal/ntsc). you'll need a multinorm-system to be able to watch it unless you are using a vcr, that is capable of converting the pal-signal from the dvd into an ntsc-signal. lots of the vcr's these days are capable of ntsc-playback. they even convert the ntsc-signal into a pal-signal BUT these vcr's are normally not capable of converting a pal-signal into an ntsc-signal which is actually recordable.
in most of the cases, you will end up with an empty tape.
vcr's that are capable of recording a pal-dvd with an ntsc-signal are incredibly expensive and are normally only found in a professional studio...
Ripping the DVD and converting it into a VCD or on another DVD
again - HIGHLY ILLEGAL (and i will not post a how-to)
it is still the same problem. the output that comes from the dvd will be in PAL and needs to be converted into NTSC in order to run on a US-system.
--------
just a note: the dvd does not say 'Code 2' on the box. there are non-area-code dvd's available and lots of music-dvds have no areacode (U2, Depeche Mode) so if you have a chance, you might want to check it out if it runs on your us-dvd-player. but even if it does, you will still have the problem with pal/ntsc...
cosmic greetings
