At least 8 albums?
I was on the BBC website a few days ago and found some astonishing news. I don’t know when it was last updated, but according to the BBC, Jamiroquai signed an eight-album contract with SONY after the release of WHEN YOU GONNA LEARN? back in 1993. Is this contract still in effect, and if not, when did it change?
This was very encouraging news for me here in the States. If there are three albums to come we may yet see them again in the US. I hope it’s true.
Cheers. |

8 album deal with the Sony Devil....
Hello, :bm_b:
Yep, Jamiroquai signed a 8 album deal with Sony after a rep went to hear them ONCE at one of their early 92' shows. But JK has said in several interviews that he regrets to signing the contract in the first place, touring and record company committments have gotten to him and made him mad. Hopefully one of JK's lawyers can find a loophole in the contract and let JK and the crew loose to go to another worthy label that promotes and release all their albums and music in the parts of the world Sony has neglected too, NAMELY THE STATES! But, Sony owns JK and Jamiroquai's musical butts for another three albums, but just the 8 album deal doesn't mean Sony will clean up their bad promotion practices here in the States, only us the fans here in America can show Sony why we need Jamiroquai releases! I've posted my concerns on J-Talk several times, with minor support from my fellows, I've even e-mailed the webmaster, but in typical fashion, no response! Oh well, lets hope the next album is the glimmer of the first two albums, after hearing "Cannabliss", the journey has begun! Thanks for listening and Peace!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000

Thanks for the information......I'm sorry that the boys are so unhappy with their deal with SONY. Personally, I don't care if they're with SONY or another label (although I wish they would come back to the States) so long as there are more albums to come! I heard rumors that their reign might be coming to an end, and AFO might be the second-to-last (if not last) release by the band. I wish they could find a deal they are happy with, but I'm mostly encouraged to hear the music will not end here and now.
Thanks again! |

During question time at the recent Session with Derrick and Sola here in Melbourne, someone asked why the band had moved from such long epic tracks to sugary little 3 minute tunes recently, and Derrick's reply was simply 'Sony'. He then went on to say that Funk Odyssey was originally about 25 or so tracks long, and that the 10 we actually got weren't necessarily the best, just the ones Sony thought they could market best. He said that they can't really do anything about it, because when Sony's putting that much money into them for the album and tours, they just have to take it, which is a damn shame, we could be having twice as much Funk Odyssey as we have! and better too!
Anyway, my question is, could Jamiroquai do more albums after their eight album contract has ended? Would it just be a matter of searching for another label? _________________ This is just another story... |

I would assume they could find another label.....someone will pick them up. I just hope they still want to do their music after 8 albums. Honestly, I thought the sound of AFO was a little tired, a little "sugary", as you put it. I wanted to hear more of the SPACE COWBOY type tunes, and I bet many of the Jamiroquai fans would agree.
Personally, I think the boys have enough clout that they can decide what should be on the album, and what shouldn't. They're too successful to let SONY tell them what to do, and they won't fall off the face of the earth if they release another album like ROTSC or EOPE. That's what made them big, and the world will love it. |

Yeah, I totally agree with you Freddie. They should get back to their roots and do their cheeba cheeba kinda space cowboy vibe! I like AFO and it was the Album with which I became a Jami Fan but after hearing the other Albums I definetely love ROTSC best |

I fell in love with the band when I heard TWOM. I actually never heard Virtual Insanity when it came out, my friend introduced me to the band in 2000. But my favorites are a tie between TWOM and ROTSC.
What are the possibilities that Jamiroquai will continue producing after hitting 8 albums? Jay and Derrick are the only members left since ROTSC, and I'm afraid the new musicians may not have the same talent for writing as Toby Smith (and dare I say it, Stuart Zender?). Only time will tell.
Cheers. |

Jamirofan, do you think CANNABLISS is a step toward the early sound? I think that's interesting if you do, because I was thinking just the opposite......aside from the lyrics, the song seems very "post-zender", for lack of a better description.
The live recordings have a very euphoric middle section, which is almost entirely keyboard, and that sounds very much like the earlier music, but the majority of the song has a heavy guitar sound, which is a lot more like DEEPER UNDERGROUND and TWENTY ZERO ONE.
At least Jay's singing about weed again.....you know we're heading in the right direction |

A partial step in the right direction....
Hello, :5snowman:
Well, Freddie, I think "Cannabliss" is partial step toward the old sound. Yeah, I guess you said it sounded very "post-zender", but Fyffe does a AMAZING job filling those important shoes, showing even he can carry the heavy weight of needed basslines for Jamiroquai. Now to "Cannabliss", I know the majority of the fans will say it's still the "new sound", which I partially agree, but it's more like the "new sound" dipping it's toes in the "old sound" and feeling quite a chill, It's kind of hard for me to throughly explain my views, but I think I did a good job there! So, I feel "Cannabliss" is "old new sound", still gives a little indication where the 6th album will vear to, hopefully the classic Jamiroquai album balance of half ballads and half dance hits, but I'm hoping for one or two "WYGL" or "Kids" type songs! I hope this answers your question, thanks for listening! Have a Merry Christmas everyone and Peace!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000

I think you've hit the nail on the head with that. Cannabliss is different than the old stuff, but isn't exactly classifiable with the sound of AFO, and it isn't brand new. I would also like to see songs like WHEN YOU GONNA LEARN and THE KIDS on the next album.
I also agree with the half slow, half fast album. Something dance (Little L), something groovy (Space Cowboy), something sad (Picture of my Life), something mellow (Morning Glory), something sexy (Everyday), something that wants to save the world (Emergency on Planet Earth). The new sound will fit in perfectly, whatever the mood. I wonder if we'll get the digeridoo back?
I think they will steer away from the "sugary" songs next go round, and I'm thankful for that.
I didn't mean to imply that Nick is inferior to Stuart in any way.....he's doing a great job with the bass, which is most important with Jamiroquai. I would say, though, that there was a significant difference in the band's sound after Stuart left, which is neither good nor bad. Personally, I like the older stuff better, but that has nothing to do with Nick Fyffe.
Peace. |

I really hope they get DJ D-Zire back in. I loved his contribution to the earlier sound. _________________ This is just another story... |

What exactly did DJ D-Zire do with the band during the early days? I've seen him creditted in EOPE and I've heard a live recording of WILD STYLE, but what did he do? Jay even says "That's my DJ" in IF I LIKE IT, I DO IT, but were they just friends to start off with (like Wallis)? |

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I just typed a really long reply....hit the wrong bloody button and lost it!!!!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrr
Okay, basically I said:
Jamiroquai, TWM was my inspiration...and they should produce to shit albums for Sony...then carry on with the story under their own label......to me...the albums are like a book, each one is a chapter....cut the crap with Sony- they should go it alone. The story deserves more.....
and Funk Odysset and Canabliss had me shaking, fingers not hitting the right key...hope you all understand...but there was something missing..and that was the "grown-up" Jamiroquai.
We need shit given to Sony.......and heaven to the fans.....
and this is my first constructive post...so intellectuals...don't diss me... |

I would agree that SONY needs to be dropped, but where would the bad albums fit into the Jamiroquai "book"? It's still Jamiroquai, and we'd have to collect them. Plus, those who wouldn't know the plan (non-fans) would lose interest and the band would lose a lot of casual listeners.
I still think the boys can convince SONY to allow some great tracks again. There can be some fantastic music to come, I don't think we should settle for three albums "just to get by". |

about dj d-zire
hi Freddie.
like wallis, dj d-zire was in jamiroquai from the begining, and wasn't in the last album. he did turntables ("scraches") in some jamiroquai songs. in live performences, he also played vocal samples, which are now replaced by the back up singers. I tried to make a list of songs with him for you:
hooked up
if I like it I do it
just another story
the kids
use the force
alright
high times
travelling without moving
planet home
