*AHEM*

I found the following rather interesting review of FJLIS on Ceefax today:

Quote:
Jamiroquai - Feels Just Like It Should

Chances are you'll have heard this already - since Jay Kay and co seem to have been performing it on every show going. If you haven't, it's worth a listen - one of their best efforts in a while, even if the resemblance to Prince is all too obvious.

Prince? Shocked

Nice review!

Let's hope that the weakest track on the album gets to No1!

Ok i'll have a go at a review for what it's worth. Please bear with me if i waffle and become too overly technical, I am taking Music A level at the moment so i am being trained to waffle like this!! Smile

FJLIS I hated this when i first heard it. I was very very worried that the album would follow suit in it's, er, different direction. Having seen the video I sorta appreciate it more now. But all in all, it is certainly the weakest song on the whole album. If it does well in the charts I'll be pleased with Jay's boldness in gambling with getting new fans on board. Can you imagine many other mainstream bands experimenting with their sound after years out with such a different 1st single? Methinks not. Kudos to Jay

Dynamite We've come to expect over the recent albums since SYK the title track to not actually be good enough to make the album! So this a first for a long time! It's beginning to grow on me with it's mysterious vibe with that funky bass. I've already found myself singing out "Dynamite" randomly so it's catchy! My main criticism is that it's a tad repetitive. Not a single candidate in my opinion, which is a shame. But there are plenty more tracks for that berth Smile

SDISJ What a song! This is one of the strongest songs on the album which a gorgeous melody. I simply adore the 1st break with the stacc piano. It has been mentioned the lack of character Matt Johnson brings to JMQ and the little things like that break are very very sparse in this album. Does make me wish for Toby, and it is a hard thing for Matt to do, filling Toby's shoes. Unfortunately the lack of keyboards filling the melody line means more for Rob and this clearly irratates quite a few of you. I worry for the live versions of some of these songs as a result because in songs where Rob is very prominent i really dislike, for example Deeper Underground ever since 2002ish. Back to SDISJ, it will be a summer smash surely when the heatwave hits sunny ol' Blighty later this year Very Happy

Electric Mistress I find this song very impressive. A million miles away from the track proceeding it and a new style for JMQ to foray into. Basement Jaxx is written all over it. The winning factor for this song HAS to be it's purely thumping (for want of a technical term) chorus! It's superb, and has got my foot tapping. I also like the simplicity of the lyrics, I don't know whether it's because i've heard it plenty of times before but this is one of the few songs I can actually understand what Jay's singing! Which is always a plus Smile B-side anyone? Wish it could be but the obsession with dance remixes looks set to continue. But hey, this is a dance tune!!

Starchild I've mentioned before the funky keyboards and basic chord progression being very similar to what I heard Toby mucking around with at a rehearsal before a gig not so long ago. It's the first time JMQ have employed that sound so it is a possible inspiration? This song is pretty Stevie Wonder esq, but for that i'm pretty glad. Again JMQ have the chorus taped, and for me personally the string arrangement is superb. A welcome return for Simon Hale i assume. Have to wait till the hard copy to find that one out! This song in my opinion could benefit from more brass rather than backing singers, but the coda at the end with the backing singers is such a feel good moment that I accept the brass exclusion.

Loveblind Loveblind, and you're on my mind, even when i'm walking the dog hehe. made me chuckle, very cheeky intro that's perfect for the radical progression that follows. This becoming one of my favourites at the moment, it's a very ambitious song with 3 clear ideas in it. The waltz "carousel" moment is brilliant, very eastern European and could almost be sampled from a barbershop song the way the backing vocals interact. I would love to hear more of this sound, and more of Matt on the Piano- that being one of those moments I like. I reckon this song is defo single potential, however I fear it might not 'work' when it undergoes a radio edit, so possibly should be left alone.

Talulah Oh yes! This is what I've been waiting all these years for! A good old ballad that's right up there with the best JMQ have done. Again the strings come to my attention (is my classical musicianship becoming obvious yet?), in fact i'm so sure Mr Hale is behind the arrangement I would like to bet my house on it! This song has lovely chord progressions that used to be the staple of good JMQ music so it's i'm delighted to have a song 6mins long full of it. Towards the end of the song however I don't like the replaying of the panpipe/sax sample when the chord structure has changed to something different to what it was before. This is however my only criticism, and it probably come from listening to the sample so much that I want it do something else it doesn't. The bassist, whoever it was for this track gets kudos for a very chilled and different sound to what we've heard elsewhere in the album. Please make this a single! This MUST have airplay to cleanse the masses’ dirty ears, this is music! Very Happy

World That He Wants Some ppl are saying how they dont understand this song. Well, I for one can see quite clearly that this is a good ol' protest song about that nice Mr Bush over the pond, nothing more, nothing less. It brings great contrast to the album and there are simply magical moments to it as well. If I'm perfectly honest, this song is very very similar to my own compositions so I might be a tiny bit biased in my judgement of it. Slight criticism of it is it has a weak ending for my liking. overall, this song is very well arranged.

Black Devil Car Woah, it's got crazy whole tone stuff going on there! I love the sound created in the beginning and quiet bits. This is most defo a Rock song, which looking at the album is yet another contrast. I have to say I love this song and I really don't go for that whole heavy rock sound, the fact that it's essentially a very complex song probably wins it over for me. It's also pretty damn funky, Derrick is simply possessed in this song. His bridge when he goes mental is just crazy! The calm and serene bit in the middle is pretty cool as well, i mean driving your Enzo isn't all about driving people over! To me it's a great little metaphor for Jay cruising in his Enzo circa 290mph down some autobahn Very Happy This is gonna be a single surely!

Hot Tequila Brown This is the chilled song of the album. Haven't yet worked out if Jay is trying another reggae style song with the accent in his voice. Personally I find this a little disappointing and dare i say it boring, but I just know that its gonna grow on me, and it's certainly a mood song, I mean, that was how Jay was inspired to write this song. As already mentioned elsewhere, it could do without that cheap gunshot sample, makes it tacky to be honest. In it's defence it's not really trying to be flash so it's a strong album song much like FJLIS.

Time Won't Wait Leave the best to last eh? Where can i possibly start with this song? Now some ppl would call it dated as you can clearly see the influences in it, but this is the song that I've been singing along to all day long. It's got a little bit of everything in it, and a seriously catchy chorus. But do you know what is the most satisfying thing about it is? That in amongst the frantic mish mash of sound there are so many old JMQ trademarks in here! The falling notes on the keyboards in cadences which are in too many old songs to mention (as in older era songs), and the offbeat brass which we havent seen since, gawd, ROTSC??? EOPE??? This is therefore a brilliant "old school" JMQ knees up and I pray to the almighty that this song is released to us all, THE WORLD NEEDS TO HEAR THIS PROPER MUSIC!!!! (can you guess what my fav track is yet? Very Happy)

MrD's Summary In my mind with just a day of listening (which is as long as i believe you should give to new music from an artist that you adore to judge it properly) this is a superb album. It makes AFO a distant memory. I'm very very close in agreeing with David Rowe that is the best JMQ have produced. We must all keep in mind that in this day and age, Acid Jazz doesn't (sadly) sell records, so what JMQ have given us is a variation on a theme, a bloody good variation it is at that.

The sound on this album is fresh, and I cannot name another artist out there at the moment producing this kind of music....successfully! Bravo Jamiroquai!! Smile

Don't really have time to do a proper review so here's my light review:

Arrow The album sounds fantastic, even better than I'd imagine! This up there with the first 3 albuns concerning bassplaying Very Happy

Arrow LoveBlind is beautiful!! Black Devil Car is a great ride and that guitar sounds really good this time! Time Won't Wait really must be one of the 5 best disco songs ever(I mean ever, even counting Chic's, EWF, Dexter Wansel, Kool & the gang's ones) but Talulah is da song...the melody is so incredible and the sax is just beautiful. One cannot listen to this song and say Jamiroquai have sold out!

Arrow Starchild, Give Hate a Chance and Dynamite have great feel and great basslines!

Arrow The backing vocals do such a great job in this album, they are great singers and bring the melodies a step further! Don't get obsessive about killing the backing vocals, listen to the songs and you'll see why Jay picked them Wink By the way I really think Jay's voice in this album is better than on AFO or Synk and the way he sings is definitely better than on the last 2 albuns

Arrow Jay's voice in Talulah is just great...

Arrow Mike Spencer did a great work overall in production, I really think this album has the best production values of all 6 albuns!

Arrow The gun sound in HTB is not enough to spoil the song...it's hot, the guitar riff is so great, really. Why don't you Give ROB a Chance? He's the best guitar player jami ever had and it shows on the album

Arrow Dynamite is better than TWM, definitely!!

Very Happy

Peaceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

people who haven't heard the album have enough reviews to base opinions off so I'm going to save some time and just give you guys my overall opinion (for whatever its worth).

The album, after listening to it for 2 days straight, could be Jamiroquai's 2nd best effort top to bottom to date. While a lot of you guys LOVE EOPE, I feel like ROTSC is a more complete and polished effort (the drumming on EOPE wasn't too hot either). The only Jamiroquai Album that can touch this one is ROTSC. TWM had good numbers, but the pace was let down here and there with songs like drifting along and back to back instrumentals. Dynamite seems like the band really put the extended time off to good use and polished the hell out of the sound (although they don't go as far as Quincy Jones for someone like the Brothers Johnson - prolly a good thing) and really have some smokin tracks.

Basically, this is everything most of us realistically wanted and a lot more than most of us expected. After the dust settles and we start memorizing these tracks like the past 5 albums, we'll all agree that this is one of Jamiroquai's best outings.

I STILL THINK THE COVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MIDNIGHT SUN LOGO

Review
Hey all

I have been listening to the album for the last couple of days. I got no experience in the music industry so i'm just going to give a fans point of view on the music. I wont get to technical about different parts of the band and stuff. Hope you enjoy.

Firstly people who are labelling the album as rubbish must be on drugs or experiencing some " High Times" lol.

.........................................................................................................

Feels Just Like it Should
Been out for a while and we have all heard it. Very funky and different from Jamiroquai. Catchy tune and I believe the band took a chance to get the attention of non-Jam fans. I thought it was ok when I first heard it, but to really experience this song is to play it on a high quality surround sound system. It will blow you away.

Dynamite
The title song for the album which doesn't dissapoint. Many people have labelled it a bit repetitive but its not the words which make this song so cool. The instrumentals are amazing and very catchy. Still dont understand some of the lyrics in this song, cant wait for the lyrics to be posted up.

Seven Days in Sunny June
We have all heard it. We were all amazed. We all love it

Electric Mistress
I had mixed feelings about this song. I tended to skip this song and listen to the more popular tracks such as Talulah, Give Hate a Chance e.g. Now I realised this song is very clever and original. Not like any other song on the album and I cant get the chorus out of my head.

Starchild
Fantastic track. Very disco and is more traditional Jamiroquai. My only fault with this song is I think its a "little" too long and drags on a bit at the end. That shouldnt take away anything from the song its awesome.

Loveblind
The second track I had mixed feelings about. I love the beggining and the chorus. The track changes style various times throughout and is very up and down. This makes it a dark horse of the album which i'm slowly falling in love with even though I wont admit it.

Talulah
A long ballad. Jays voice is superb and the instrument's suit the song perfectly. Doesnt get repetitve or drag on at all even thought its a long song. I could fall asleep to this song. Perfect.

Give Hate a Chance
A funky disco tune that makes you wanna get up and dance. Hope its released as a single and I think it will attract a large audience. Some of the lyrics are unclear in this song and I dont quite get the message, so I need to read some lyrics. That doesnt take away anything from the song. One of the funkiest tracks on the album.

World That he Wants
Reminds me of black crow. It only plays outside of one speaker until about 40 seconds then it slowly goes to normal. Not sure the effect of this. A song of Jay's mind.

Black Devil Car
The rock song of the album. This one goes off and I have suspicions it may be released as a single even though its not the best track. Funny it doesnt appeal to many Jamiroquai fans but I think it will appeal largely to non-Jamiroquai fans. A clever song which expressed Jay's love of his car.

Hot Tequila Brown
I know many people will disagree with me about this song. But I absolutely love this song. I heard someone mention annoying gunshots in this song. I had listened to is about 10 times and never realised them until I read that. They dont take away anything from it. This is definetely one of my favourite songs on the album. Jay sounds supurb and and its got a hard edge to the chorus. LOVE IT

Time Wont Wait
The funkiest song of the album. Old Jamiroquai fans will love this the most. The drums are superb and the strings give it some class. Another great track.

Why I think this one of the best Jamiroquai albums is because there is such a large variety of styles incorportated into the album from chillout to funk to jazz to rock to electro. Its got everything, and it still has the fealing of Jamiroquai. Great work JAMIROQUAI this album surpassed my expectations.

My Favourite Tracks

1) Talulah
2) Hot Tequila Brown
3) Seven Days in Sunn June

Hey
By no means I am saying I dislike the track but it wasn't one of those tracks I fell in love with after hearing it for the first time. Now that Ive heard the whole album I can appreciate it more because its different.
