What do you think?
Yesterdays night ABC channel (USA) showed an interview with Basaev (in the list of the most dangerous terrorists he's on the 2d place after Bin Laden). Was that the right thing? Because after 11/09 Condoleezza Rice told that we mustn't give terrorists opportunity to speak out their ideas on TV or Radio coz they can PR that way their goals or how it could be called. And yesterday they gave that opportunity to Basaev, who's been telling on TV how he's proud that he's done that terract in Beslan and killed so many children, and how he's proud of Nord-Ost, and blasts in Underground etc. And in the end he's told that Russia should be ready for more terracts, even worse than they've already done....
I think it was cruel (according to those who've lost their relatives, friends, children in those terracts) of that TV company to show his interview.
And even worse is that those terrorists are talking bout religion, that Koran gives them the right to kill people. But I don't think that any religion in the world gives such right to anybody.

And they say that Russian embacy in US were wrong that they've sent a letter to ABC with demand not to show that interview, that US is a democratic country and gives right to everyone to speak out their ideas.
Then why didn't they let Bin Laden to speak out his ideas after 11/09?

Jay,
I guarantee he didn't get paid. But ABC did. The ratings and advertising revenue that an interview like that brings in is all that matters to ABC. MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY... MONEY!

It's all about publicity. Even we are doing our part here talking about it... After all if people didn't talk about, watch or read certain things there would be no place for this kind of publicity stunt.

Sad as it is whether something is right or wrong isn't part of the equation. Its just whether it draws people in & creates publicity. As long as there is an audience for anything controversial these things are here to stay... Rolling Eyes

this is called chequebook reporting, pepela. what this means is that to the public, ABC have pulled off this interview, but behind the scenes, they may have paid that terrorist a bit of money (note the "bit" is sarcastic) to do the interview.

then again, maybe the terrorist just wanted to be on TV.

example: On channel 9 (australia's highest rating TV station), they have a show called "60 Minutes", which uses the same philosiphy to put a bias that they want on any story. it happens all over the world.

Pietro,
I seriously don't think the guy got paid a dime. Just a little air time is all the guy needs to get his viewpoints out there and then the "contributors" will come on his own. Plus, without knowing the guy, like Bin Laden, the dude is probably not hurtin for money.

But as Yvie said, it's about the publicity and the viewership it creates. If people are watching and talking about "what they saw on ABC" today, advertisers pick up on that and buy a lot of advertising time on ABC, because they think more people will be watching.

So publicity, popularity, hype, creates revenue for the network.

Jamminneapolis-it depends on the way we are talking about this-we're not going to follow his ideas or become contributors.
But contributors will come to him coz of the tv show, because you can watch ABC in any part of the world, and he's talking there about awfull thibgs in a different, positive way.

[quote="Jaminneapolis]Pietro,

obviously in the case of the world's 2nd most evil guy, he wouldnt get the dosh. i mean, i remember some dude intrerviewed Saddam Hussien in 2002 before you guys (and a bit from the UK and my island home) invaded Iraq. he aint strapped for cash (well now he is), but he just wanted his ideals put across, as you have stated.
