THE DRUGS DON'T WORK ANYMORE
Jay Kay says he's a changed man now he's quit coke and going out clubbing
By Gavin Martin
Sipping a post-performance drink in his swanky South of France hotel suite in Cannes, Jay Kay is in fine fettle. Jamiroquai have just played a dazzling outdoor show on the beach down the Riviera at Golf-Juan, highlighting songs from the classy new album Dynamite.
With his fleet-footed dance work, vocal talent and razor-sharp band, the cat in the hat displayed the sort of audience rapport that has helped sell 20 million records since his 1993 debut, Emergency On Planet Earth.
Jay, 36, is happy to admit that his decision to kick his cocaine habit on New Year’s Day 2004, with a tough training programme organised by his pal Olly, has revitalised him.
“It made me fitter and it made me better able to sing because the two go hand-in-hand,” he says. “It was something Olly and me had done before. But the trouble was, he had another job so it kinda fell apart. I needed a sustained assault to make any ground on it. Once you go a certain distance you’re well away and it’s been a great thing for me.”
On the current tour, Jay has resisted all temptation to go back to his bad habits.
“It’s funny the amount of people who come out of the woodwork who knew me four or five years ago and go, ‘Hey, do you want to try this?’ he says. “I’m like, ‘Don’t you read the f***ing newspapers?’ I avoid them like the plague. |
