A JK favorite....
Well folks, I've recently been perplexed and I was hoping someone could help me out.....I think a native Brit is going to be the best help, but we'll see.

In many of the live recordings I have I hear Jay say something that sounds to me like the word "murder". I'm not sure, because this makes absolutely no sense to me, but regardless in the middle of a song (particularly in 1993-1994) this word, whatever it is, is thrown all over the place. I heard him say it for the first time at the tail end of an mp3 of WILD STYLE, and more notably in an early recording of Just Another Story from 1994 (the word's use in JAS made considerably more sense). Since then I've heard it in at least five other places, most of which would seem to have nothing to do with murder.

Anyway, has anyone else heard it? Is this some slang British I'm not familiar with? Is he actually saying "murder", or it something that sounds like it? Whatever he's saying, what (if anything) does it mean?

Thanks mates.

Hello Freddie,

Not having heard those recordings I'll hazard a guess..

Okay, I would say

"i could murder a fag"

Or.."I could murder a drink right now"

Or "I could murder a cup of tea"

and talking tea..I'm just going to make a cup...

Hope this helps.

Hmmmm, so murder = consume? Possibly, but that still doesn't make much sense to me, since I believe he's just saying the one word.

If anyone else has a guess, I'd love to hear about it. If you'd like to hear it straight from the horse's mouth, you can download the bootleg at http://www.jazziroquai.de.vu . I think he says it at least once, maybe twice.

Still baffled here.

Just an update, I've also heard the word in THE KIDS from the bootleg. He just shouts it out....I really don't get it.

Anyway, if someone can help, it's kind of tearing me apart.

Cheers.

Hello again Freddie.

Murder in the context I used it means "to long for" "desire" - rather than "consume".

I listenened to that recording - doesn't Jay say "murder" just meaning "murder"? In "Just Another Story" the lyrics refer to the problems faced in some areas of society - kids get mixed up in the drugs, then the heavy shit that can come with it - the violence, gang type stuff - so doesn't Jay Kay say "murder" relating to what happens in that way of life?

This reminds me of being at school Very Happy.

Yeah, it makes sense in the context of JUST ANOTHER STORY, and THE KIDS, but how about this.....

At the end of the recording I have of SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED (from SONGS FOR MANITU) he says:

"Murder! Ladies and gentlemen, courtesy of Mr. Stevie Wonder.

We're gonna do a little number here that Stu came up with. Murder. You're gonna dig it, it's a new number."

(The little intro above is talking about Stu's Tune.)

Still lost here.

He says it in EOPE from Songs For Manitu, too. In fact, the word is drizzled all over just about every track I find from 1993-1994. I can't keep writing where I find it, but it's everywhere.

Maybe it's just continuing the eco-funk movement. I don't know.

Maybe you're right - it could just mean "murder' in general - murder of the planet.

Or maybe there was some little game going on - the other band member's gave Jay Kay a quid for every 'murder" he managed to get in?

I'm sorry I'm really not much help. I think you need assistance from the real knowledge-bases here - post a message and ask Jamirokaki on J Talk - he's always good with these type of questions.

btw. are you just trying to get to your 200th?????!

Oooh, I never noticed this before, or I would have responded sooner!

I don't really know how to explain this, it's more from my Dad's era (maybe I should ask my Dad for a better way to explain? Ah, dammit, he's out!).

The word "Murder" used in this context is more associated with Reggae and Roots & Culture music. It's something an MC would say when a good rhythm starts playing. I am by no means an expert, but I think it's just a way of expressing pleasure, kind of like "This tune is so good it's MURDERING the dancehall!".

Notice how Jay says it with a slight West Indian twang. Or at least he tries, bless him. Always makes me giggle when people from other cultures try to speak with any West Indian accent. Reminds me of trying to teach my very white-middle-class friend Nicola how to suck her teeth! Took months. LOL

Oh, daddy came back, he said "Murder" is generally used as a term of excitement, shock, or agitation. For example:

(imagine these quotes in a West Indian accent!)
"Murder! You see Ambrose take 3 wicket!"
or
"Jay Kay take that corner like 'im Michael Schumacher! Murder!"

Basically how someone would say "Oh My God!" or "Lord!"

Erm, there you go, I hope that helps.

Thank you so much, Ezbe! That's what I was looking for! You're very descriptive.

Well Ms. P, it looks like I'm rapidly approaching 200, but it's not something I'm shooting for. I believe this puts me at 196!

I love this site. Wish I could post more often.

Cheers. Murder!

Haha....I just learned that British term "bender". I'd like to go on one myself, but it's illegal over here (might just go and do it anyway Wink)

Up to 197.
