i think that rob is a perfect player but a funk band doesn't need a perfect player 'cause this is not funky at all! rob hasn't that funky vibes that the old band had.. he's only a great musician in jay's hands who plays funky, it's different. jamiroquai don't have today the features of a band but i see they like many musician playin everyone his stuff.. that's not great |

i am bringing this back up to say that i 'get' more of what you all are saying.
i listened to a live version of 'use the force' from 97 and i listened to a version from 2005.
i've heard the difference, but not really paid attention to it, but it really stood out to me this weekend.
not agreeing or disagreeing, but i do get where you are all are coming from now and i didn't a few weeks ago.

Rob Harris has posted an interesting comment about his playing style at the funkin guestbook - here a quote:

The music has evolved from the early days.It would've happened who ever was in the band.Just listen to Toby's and Stuart Zenders output since thier departure. They have evolved musically. Some of the rocky parts i play are often suggested by Jay because that is what he wants to hear.I don't roll up to rehearsals and try to turn jamiroquai songs into Mettalica songs lol.I love funk music,i grew up withit.I just play it from a different angle to Simon Katz.

People playing guitar usually starts out with rock or metal because it's "easier" to learn and play. When their technique has been refined and their playing is flawless they usually evolve musically as well. When they become bored with rock and metal because of the limited space, the predefined reference frames and more importantly the "rules" they start playing.... <drum whirl> jazz!
Jazz is on top of the music mountain... there are no rules, you can do anything... going from rock to jazz is to evolve. Going from jazz to rock is simply nothing but regression.
Just my 2 cents though... |

It just couldn't be GREATER!!!!!!!!!! That would be my choice for an evolution in them... just a dream I've had too, but I totally agree with you!!! |

I've been a big fan of Jamiroquai for many years, and I have to say that although Dynamite had its moments, it is probably my least favourite of the six. AFO was brilliant though.
I think the reason for the difference in the sound or the 'vibe' of the new stuff is not only due to the advancement in technology, but also to the style of chord progressions and instrumental layering. Take for instance 'Feels so Good' (the first single from Dynamite) and compare it to 'Virtual Insanity' (the first single from TWM). Virtual has a very progressive harmony with a definate shift of progressions and dynamics from Verse to Chorus to Middle 8, whereas Feels so Good has a very static chord progression which is made to feel progressive with the layering of effects or instrumental lines. For me this is the biggest factor in the change of sound for Jamiroquai. Songs like 'Little L' and 'You Give me Something' also share this kind of structuring, for better or worse.
I hope Jay keeps on pushing forward and experimenting with new sounds and ideas in the future, and who knows, perhaps there will be a renaissance for Jamiroquai that will surpass even TWM. |

yeah, but you may want to say "feels just like it should" instead "feels so good"

Oops, just shows how much I've listened to it. I'm being a little unfair, I actually like that track (even though the title does sound uncannily similar to Feels So Good from AFO).

You actually prefer Dynamite to AFO? For me AFO is a very strong album from start to finish, whilst there are only a few tracks from Dynamite I actually revisit. I like Dynamite, don't get me wrong, but there are quite a few weak tracks I feel could have perhaps been left off the album, one of them being 'Dynamite'.
I think Jay's new material is in danger of being 'over-produced', perhaps partly due to Mike Spencer, and partly due to the fact that Jamiroquai = Jay Kay (rather than a permanent bad line-up). I understand every new band member adds a whole new dimension to the band, but I just feel it hasn't quite clicked into place. To me it just seems like Jay jamming with a bunch of studio musicians.
Perhaps I'm in a minority here?

Oh my gosh...Hell yes! I barely play AFO or tracks from it. They come up in the IPOD shuffle and that's about it. And I only have 4 or so tracks from that album on there and one of them is the bonus track 'So Good To Be Real'...haha!
Many people probably agree with you, but personally my ears can't take much of AFO. It's not horrible and I can tolerate it, I just don't like it. Matter of fact, here is a thread that is dedicated to the over-produced factor that you might dig: http://www.jamirotalk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4440&highlight=overproduced
I think I was attached to AFO when it first came out because I saw them the night before in concert, but yes, I prefer Dynamite over AFO...Anyday! _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

Cheers for the link, I'll check it out. I've actually been listening to Dynamite alot recently, probably because it's the only album of theirs I haven't worn to death! I'm starting to like it more and more though, but it didn't instantly appeal to me in the way that the other 5 did. |

if jamiroquai would still be playing the same stuff that they played 14 years ago, all the people that complain about the new stuff would be saying " they should change!! , this band doesnt evolve, bla bla bla" as cosmic mouse said stop cliging to the past and enjoy this new things that the band has to offer.
And man!! how can an excellent guitar player as Rob Harris be negative for the band!?, he gave jam a more rocky sound but when he plays the old stuff he has those funky vibes that every fan demands. _________________ Sounds Kind Of Funky!!
