Ah, Jam, you mean MICHAEL Owen. Don't know where you got Greg from. Anyway, Owen broke onto the world scene back in France 98 with that goal against Argentina. He's 25 now, still scarily young bearing in mind he's about to go to his 3rd World Cup (assuming he's fit again).
Now, two other points from your post:
1) The idea that MLS pays higher wages than the European leagues is the funniest thing I've ever heard. If they did, then you'd have a lot more decent players than just a load of past-it Europeans and up-and-coming Americans in your league (that's not meant as an insult in any way, just a statement of fact).
2) Freddy Adu still isn't anything like Michael Owen. Michael Owen's game consists of basically three elements:
i) Hanging around in the box waiting for his marker to stick his leg out, at which point Saint Mickey falls over it, earning his team a penalty. (He's truly world class at this.)
ii) Holding the ball in the box for just long enough to lay it off to his strike partner or a midfielder to score. (He's better at this since he went to Madrid for a year last season.)
iii) Hanging around in the box until the ball comes to him and taking no more than three touches to get it past the 'keeper and into the net for a goal. (He's probably the best in the world at this.)
It's a very, very long time since he was able to do what he did against Argentina. He'll never score a goal like that again, because his pace has gone and he's just not that good at anything but putting it in the goal any more. From what I've seen of Adu, he's exactly the opposite kind of forward.
And Argies, stop moaning about your group. If you want to think about winning the Cup you'll have to beat the big boys at some point (after all, Germany are the only nation who'd ever get to the final through the luck of the draw...). You'll qualify for the last 16 without any problems at all, and that's the first thing to worry about, so the fact you're with Holland isn't SO disastrous...

i am going to support Portugal in this World Cup 2006. there are so many good looking Portuguese men on this planet and they are not getting enough attention even our frontman who is quite handy with his footwork |

Samir,
I agree with everything you said. The problem is you would have agreed with me if you would have read my post more closely.
Here is my direct quote about the MLS Players:
You're right, the MLS is a 2nd rate league for Euro rejects and U.S. players that go unnoticed around the world. But they all play super hungry for that reason. They know they're playing for a better league and better $$$ in Europe. Their hunger and desire seems to make up for a lack of talent.
It clearly says they know that they are playing for the oppourtunity to get in better leagues with better money IN Europe... not than Europe. I never said anything close to saying the MLS boys make anything close to the Euro players. MLS and Soccer as a whole at the professional level takes a complete back seat to baseball in the U.S. in the summer. Plus, football is the U.S.'s most popular sport... American football. _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Yep, you're right. Sorry. I read and post on here very late at night so I do sometimes 'see' words that aren't there (in this case I read 'better $$$ THAN in Europe'). And football - real football - is apparently the most popular sport for participation in the US. Just an awful lot of people there who like playing it but find it boring to watch, which sounds very peculiar to the rest of us...

*lol* I was going to say the same thing. I don't care who wins as long as the Portuguese team gets as much "pitch time" as possible! _________________ funk you! |

The U.S. had a nice "friendly" win against Japan last night. Both teams made a good showing in the last Woirld Cup, so it's not like the two should be considered "cupcakes" this time around... _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Certainly not. I'd say potential quarter-finalists but you've got a very tricky group. Having said that Italy have been a bit pants of late so we'll just have to wait and see... |

Ah but since Japorea 2002 a lot of the Japanese players have moved to the European leagues, which can only help their game. Nakata may be playing for Bolton but he's class all the same, and their group isn't as tricky as some, Brazil excepted - they can give both Croatia and Australia a run for their money.

Yes!! I'm the fan of France national football team! And Z.Zidane is my favourite player. Too bad he is retiring after this World Cup.. _________________
