Jamiroquai... innovated music?
Hello Jamirotalkers,

Jamiroquai will turn 15 years soon, maybe in a year or two, we don't know the exact time of the fundation.

But I was thinking, do you think the band innovated, musically speaking?

I think they did. Specially in the last albums. We all like the first ones, more raw, but musically I think they brought the funk we like from the 70's and updated it with the electronic music from nowadays.

Many others DJ's did this perhaps, but not a live band. And they've been here for 15 years. I think that's quite an achievement. And live, even without the horn section, they ROCK. Believe you me.

What do you think?

Jaminnovation!
I agree Diego!!

I think Jamiroquai are one of a kind. They are pretty much the only mainstream band who are flying the flag for jazz/funk in the world!?

I love the way like you said Diego, that they have modernised sort of 70's disco with an electronic sound. As much as we all love the 'old' Jamiroquai sound, the way the music industry has gone, i'm not sure whether another EOPE would do as well as it should?

But yeah, they are definitely one of the most innovative bands ever in my opinion and so so so so underrated its untrue!!

I discovered Jamiroquai with the sound of "A funk Oddisey", so, I´m agree on what you say. I love that sound

of course they've changed, but for me, it wasn't a magnificent change, but well...

they're playing nice and it is what counts... they're a great band!

...I love Jamiro, I'm crazy with them but...talking about innovation...mmmh, it' a big word applied to them. They were smart enough to mix at their best. Elements from 70's funky, soul (Fender piano and jazzy chords..), slapping bass patterns from funky and disco (Sly, Chic, EW&F), disco, James Brown, Motown, a 100 other influences.... shake them all and...the perfect deja-vu formula. Nothing new, nothing strange, but everything so delicious to listen.
I think the word "innovation" can be applied to artists such Miles, Jimi, Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, and so on. The others...are good or bad "rank-xerox" men. This doesn't mean that the music result is unlistenable.....

partially agree... jamiroquai does not make electronic funk.....take the electronic word out.. just say they do funk which basically came up on the 70s nowadays with of course better equipment that the one they had when they started

...better equipment? I don't think so. Tobey used to play Rhodes, Hohner Planet clavinet, Minimoog, Memorymoog...the other instruments were bass, guitar and drum. The instruments that characterized that 70s sound were just those keyboards. Therefore, it can be spoken about vintage but not about "better" equipment....

Innovative are artists like Dexter Wansel, Earth Wind & Fire, Norman Connors...all the people who created the template for the music Jamiroquai makes. Jamiroquai has their moments too though.
