Well it's nice to know, at least, that when it comes to writing the story of Zidane's career, it's not going to be pure masturbation about how great e was. What was said to him really doesn't matter, as Lee says. He's a grown man and he knew what the result of his action would be. He should have just done it and then turned round and walked straight off the pitch.
A fitting end to the tournament, really - started brilliantly and turned out not to be quite as special as the opening stages had led us to hope. But both finalists deserved to be there, without any doubt, and Italy could use a bit of light anyway, what with the stuff happening in Serie A at the moment.
Speaking of which let's hope the FIGC don't use this as an excuse to let guilty parties of the hook...
Enjoy the party, Italians!

Congrats to the italians, i knew they were gonna do it
zidane... poor guy. under so much pressure and after what materazzi said i kinda understand him, it's a pity there is no way to be 100 % sure about the insult. materazzi may have gotten some matches of suspention because of racism. _________________ We're going to a funktion yeah yeah yeah |

Zidane getting the Golden Ball - a sentimental vote - based on the fact that we knew it would be his last hurrah - if ever there was one! Pirlo or Cannavaro should have got it - Zidane was superb but he wasn't THAT good!
And I must say I'm surprised Carlitos's goal was rated quite that highly - I suppose because it was the closest thing we got this time round to a solo goal. Torres's against Ukraine was better, for me, but the top two are unquestionable (although I'd have put Cambiasso's above Maxi's...).
For what it's worth, for your reading pleasure, here's my team of the tournament, taken from my blog. If you have a look on there you'll also see my personal highlights and (me being English) lowlights of the tournament. http://samlkelly.spaces.msn.com/
Chosen for purely entertainment purposes, and not necessarily indicative of who I actually thought the best players were - though it is based solely on performances in this World Cup. It should be pointed out that I'm employing a proper, attacking 4-3-3 here, so the two wingers are playing high up the pitch.
Manager: Jurgen Klinsmann (assisted by Marcelo Lippi and Guus Hiddink)
Goalkeeper: Richard Kingson (Ghana)
Right-back: Gianlucca Zambrotta (Italy - even more impressive given that he's actually a left-back)
Centre-back: Roberto Ayala (Argentina)
Centre-back: Fabio Cannavaro (Italy) - who, as the man who lifted the Cup, not to mention the only Italian player who's not a dirty, dirty bastard, gets to captain this team.
Left-back / left-midfield / left-wing: Juan Pablo Sorin (Argentina)
Sitting deep in central midfield: Andrea Pirlo (Italy)
Attacking midfield: Zinedine Zidane (France) - because in fairness to him, he did play very well until the final ten minutes. And even the headbutt was followed through with exemplary technique.
Attacking midfield: Steven Appiah (Ghana)
Right wing: Maxi Rodriguez (Argentina)
Left wing: Lukas Podolski (Germany)
Centre-forward: Miroslav Klose (Germany)
Substitutes:
Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)
Fabio Grosso (Italy)
Rafael Márquez (Mexico)
Owen Hargreaves (England)
Esteban Cambiasso (Argentina)
Didier Zokora (Ivory Coast)
Xavi Hernández (Spain)
Maniche (Portugal)
Carlos Tevez (Argentina)
Hernán Crespo (Argentina)

Great team man... But I rather choose Phillipe Lahn instead of Sorin...
But anyway... you´re the coach _________________ There's only once or twice that you're in line with Mr. Moon |

Haha... no, Jurgen Klinsmann's the coach, remember?
In my opinion Lahm was more visible than Sorin, but not necessarily much better... Pablo played more for the team, in my opinion. Plus I love full-backs who get caught offside. And have silly hair.

Lee - the answer to that one, surely, is to stop reading the thread...?
