Marvin Gaye is one of my favourite musicians too.
My mum make me listen to him, and I don't regret it!
I don't know all his Music (I only have the Best Of and the L'et's Get It On album), but I love so much to listen and re-listen the songs I have.
And also I wanted to share this video with you. It's a playback, but it's always nice to see him performing. The song is Keep Gettin' It On, a.k.a Let's Get It On Part 2, at Soul Train

About Marijuana
Gaye teamed up with Diana Ross for Diana & Marvin, an album of duets that began recording in 1971, while Ross was pregnant with her first child, Rhonda. Gaye, a longtime marijuana smoker, refused to put his joints out for the pregnant Ross, who immediately complained to Berry Gordy about the issue. Gaye refused to sing if he couldn't smoke in the studio, and the duets album was recorded by overdubbing Ross and Gaye at separate studio session dates.
About football career
Tammi Terrell (Marvin recorded duets with her in 60s) died of brain cancer on March 16, 1970. Gaye subsequently went into self-seclusion, and did not perform in concert for nearly two years. He tried various spirit-lifting diversions, including a short-lived attempt at a football career with the Detroit Lions. He trained hard but the team's managers turned him down without a tryout. He continued to feel pain with no form of self-expression. As a result, he entered the studio on June 1, 1970 and recorded the songs "What's Going On", "God is Love", and "Sad Tomorrows" - an early version of "Flying High (In the Friendly Sky)". |

Marvin's track called "Sad Tomorrows" is playing constantly in my head.. i love it so much. It was released as The B-Side of "Mercy Mercy Me" single in 1971.

hi i dont know who will discuss with me one thing i am thinking about..
maybe deesh? what i wanted to say is i dont understand why so few
people like Marvin Gaye's music??? i am one of his biggest fans on Earth,
believe me. i love his music so much... but i never met people who loves him too, i ve seen very few fans only on internet. I mean i understand when nobody loves for example Leon Ware because he is not so well known, but Marvin was best selling artist on Motown. |

well, firstly..most marvin gaye fans are my parents age - - and they aren't on computers as you and i always are! well, i don't know how old you are to make that statement, but you know what i mean  . so that doesn't surprise me that you don't find them on the internet.
there are many marvin fans out there, but not as die hard as yourself. many people know the main songs and the fact that his father shot and killed him in the 80's. that's your brilliant musical knowledge that leads you to make these posts with so much info that the average person won't know. people on average respect his work and his contribution to music especially during the motown era, and that's about it. and those that know what you know are like 45 - 60 years of age, and as I said..they aren't on the net!
many marvin fans are on soul/r&b websites and sites based around actual musicians - like specific guitar, keyboard sites, etc.
also take note that motown doesn't have the best modern day reputation, so no one really pays attention to it anymore.
he died way too early. i think if he would have lived and made more records, he'd have more fans that are our age.
when the movie comes out, i think it'll open up a new generation to marvin once again.

Just mentioned it on the Leon Ware / Dexter Wansel thread, but Marvin's big over here in the UK, too. Maybe I've got a slightly distorted idea of things because my dad's obsessed with Motown and old soul records, but everyone who claims to be 'seriously' into music over here has at least some respect for what Marvin did.
And I even know the exact date he was killed - because it was the same night I was born!

Exactly. I knew Marvin Gaye thanks to my mother, who is a fan. She told me she heard him when she was going to nightclubs (it was between late 60's). So when I was very young I found in my brother's CD a compliation from the Motown, and there was "What's Going On". Since this day, I love his music. |

thank you very much that you
decided to check his music.
Jay said in interview: he was one of the deepest man of his time,
and this is so right. i started to listen to him because he is one of JAY and Toby Smith's favourite musicians, but when i first heard his albums, i understood that this is what i needed so much.
his best albums "I Want You"
and "Here My Dear" are not so easy to understand for beginners,
they may take some time for you to start loving them
but this is just because they are very deep beautiful and outstanding.

Taught me alot about a guy who I actually know embarrisngly little about.. |
