About The Comparisons Between JK's Voice And Stevie Wonder's
Okay,so it's no secret that many critics and such think that Jay sounds a lot like Stevie Wonder as far as his singing voice goes. I can somewhat hear the similarities. It's hard to describe how,but they're there.

It seems like JK and other Jamiroquai fans I've talked to in the past sort of take offense when people say this, though. How do you guys feel when this comparison is made? Also,do you agree that they sound alike somewhat?

maybe in early days this comparison of voices was noticeable, but definitely not now. it's true that may be similar in some songs but jay never wanted to be like stevie wonder or copy him, that's the ba dpoint of critics who compre him, they don't just say they are similars, they say he copy him...

To be honest I've never really been able to hear the similarity myself. The music is very obviously influenced by Stevie, but I've never quite got those who say that Jay himself sounds like Stevie...

I'm not offended by it, I just can't hear it!

I can't hear it either, but when my 8 year old heard Superstition on the radio he said "Is this Jamiroquai?" Wink Maybe we fans can differentiate because we know the music so well so we know whether it's Jay or Stevie, but to the untrained ear there might be something there...

As an avid listener (huge understatement Razz ) of both Jamiroquai and Stevie Wonder, I do notice similarities between the two in SOME songs. They both have a bit of a ummm...it's hard to describe...I don't wanna say "whiny" because that sounds like a negative term, but their tone and something in their voices are similar at times.

You can notice it moreso in Jamiroquai's earlier stuff than the more recent stuff, though. Surprised

I think magazines at the EOPE time didn't know how to criticize JK. So they found his influences and they interpreted it to write that JK is just a Stevie Wonder n°2.

Personally, I listened to an EOPE track, and after a Stevie track, and now I'm unable to confuse them yet.

i never understood it until i heard the song " i was made to love her"..since listening to this song i can kinda understand why they started to compare jay kay a bit with the "early" stevie wonder...the way he things really remembers of it...
but the stevie songs especially the chorus are going more into ear , if that expression exists in english...but in the verse parts is a similar style to find...

anyway i love stevie but prefer jay Wink

Seeing as though Jay's voice is busted, I don't think this is a problem anymore.. Crying or Very sad I think the comparisons were sort of unfounded, but they had a similar delivery and timbre at times?

Eh...I wouldn't say that Jay's voice is "busted"...he can't quite hit some notes and such like he used to,but he still does good for himself.

And yeah, their delivery and timbre being similar at times would probably be the best way to describe it.

Ferrari-Bentley Wink

Jay's the Ferrari - Superficial from the outside, but mechanically blinding...
Bentley's are all class!

Maybe not totally, but it's not half what it used to be 10 years ago.
Didn't he go see a doctor about it a few years back? I seem to remember him being warned it could go completely or something (around the time of Synk/AFO I think). Party lifestyles hey... Rolling Eyes

Sometimes, the higher notes, but not really.

One thing to remember is that EVERYONE is compared to Stevie Wonder or has been in some review, article or fashion.

Examples: Glenn Lewis, Musiq Soulchild, Justin Timberlake, Donnie, Remy Shand, Robin Thicke...

It's not really a big deal to me, and it happens all the time.

It's a compliment. As I said before, not like they compared his voice to Bobby Brown or something Rolling Eyes

Right, he can still sing relatively well, but he has lost his range and timbre. His voice is much more distinctly male and is airy/raspy now..I guess that's okay in some contexts, but I think his voice around age 22-25 was much better and was one of a kind. Living the party life of coke, alcohol, and chain-smoking was not friendly to Jay's voice, to say the least.
