PAUL TURNER , Stop using music man basses PLZ
Well ... first of all , i wanna say that I LOVE music man basses too !
BUT , music man basses and a soap bar pics don´t fit so good in jamiroquai musics ! ! ! sounds like '' Poft ... poft '' =/ the sound dissapear behind other instruments sometimes =/
in the Jazz Cafe show, he only used a Fender Jazz Bass and it was G R E A T
for me , he only should use fender basses or some bass with JB picks or EMG bartollini pics
well ... what u all think about ?

I remember reading a topic some time ago saying I wasn't suitable for Jamiroquai or have the "funk" because I used MM basses.
I'm sure this is the same author.
Firstly it's nice to see a positive comment re my Fender Jazz Bass.
Re Musicman basses.......mmmmmm
Obviously you're a player with a bias.
Great we have one thing in common, only I retain an open mind and awareness of musical and professional requirements.
I've been playing for 26 years and usually prefer Js & Ps, over others.
I've recorded with a lot of BIG names playing a lot of different styles and toured for years in all types of venues, from stadiums to clubs.
I draw on that experience when I decide what I play.
I've been using Jazz basses, Precision basses AND Musicman basses for YEARS.
MM basses have a higher more "middley" fundamental tone and that makes them more defined in large gigs.
IMO they are best suited to syncopated finger style funk/disco. Which has been the main vibe of Jamiroquai's gigs for the last few years.
For some of the older tunes I have usually changed bass.
I have to AGREE with you about the pull/pop sound on a MM being thin. It's not my preferred sound for slap/pull, although Louis Johnson is known for his great slap playing on his Musicman.
That's why you'll always see me change to my Fenders every now and then especially for slap tunes and some others that need more weight but not as much punch in the lows.
I also think 4 strings sound better than 5 but it's a gig and I have to cover certain areas, so I make the decision and try not piss anyone off by changing too often.
I've been searching for MY ideal 5 string for live gigs for a long time to be happy with the pull sound.
I also have to have a live bass that's punchy especially on big gigs though and that's why MM 5 string basses are SO popular.
Out of preference and to have some of MY character and tone, I used my 1964 Fender P bass for both Runaway and Radio.
I also did a version of Runaway on my 77 MM Stingray and Jay preferred that sound for the chorus.................... so that's what it is........ MM chorus, with the P in the verse!
The desk tapes that you may hear are not mixed for listening to at home.
They are mixed to make the band sound right in large venues, where the bass may be boomy and playing a bass with naturally more bottom (like a J or P) will often get lost.
The Jazz Cafe was mixed for broadcast from a mobile studio outside the venue.
Never been to gig and not been able to hear the bass? I've been to hundreds and that's why I work with the engineer to find the best for live gigs or the studio or particular song.
I decided to use my beloved Fenders more for these RECORDED SMALL dates because I feel they work better in those situations.
With reference to whether they are suitable for Jamiroquai.........
Do you know what songs Nick played MM basses on the Synkronised album?
Or what tracks off Dynamite feature MM basses?
Do you know what basses I played on radio 2 the other day? Let me know what you think and I'll honestly reply with the answers.
It's quite easy but the point is I think I used what was right for the song and avoided changing bass mid broadcast!
If you are the same author who made the statements above then........
Did Louis Johnson (of Bros. Johnson & 100s of classic funk tracks) not have the funk or sound good?
Did Bernard Edwards (of Chic, Sister Sledge & 100s of classic disco and funk tracks) not have the funk or sound good?
If you're smart you may know that neither of them played MM exclusively (you may, like me, know which tracks they used other basses) but they were know for playing MM 90% of the time.
MM basses have something that works. Not all of the time but a lot of the time.
Peace ..................... Please
Paul |

Hi Paul,
thanks for your message! Very interesting to read, although I am not an expert at all.
I never doubted your skills to choose the best instrument for the different occasions and necessities.
Also, I don't think it is possible to judge sounds of a bass from a radio broadcast. You have to hear it live! And seeing and hearing you live is a real pleasure!!
Keep up the good work!
All the best,

Hi Paul!
Thanks for your reply. As I said before in my Jazz Café review and as I told to the BBC in a little opinion-interview I think you are really doing a good job and brought something extra to Jamiroquai.
For example: in Travelling Without Moving, the new break in Canned Heat and If I Like It I Do It.
Keep up the great work!
Cheers,
Jeroen. |

Hi Paul!
I think it's so cool that you come here and explain your work. Although I haven't understood a word you said. .
I just listen and I like what I hear.
Keep up the good work!

Woow PAUL TURNER!!!! What an honor!!
First of all Your playing with the band has been amazing to say the least, I saw you in the gig en Venezuela and was impressed about how relaxed you play and the way You enjoyed playing the tunes. Definitively Something to remeber...
Great you mention this stuff about MM Basses and their sound. We got it from the man himself!!
I could play a MM just for a couple of times so I'll drop my opinion on all the music I've been able to hear.
It's not a casualtity that through the years many bassists decide to play in studio or live with MM Basses, Rock, Alternative, Pop, Soul, R&B and Funk, has been some of the generes wich we got to hear the sound of them. Red hot chili peppers, Sade, Linking park, Amigos invisibles have used them long time for their gigs.
Altough the studio process and all that it brings can shape their sound into a different one, they have a sound that's been familiar worldwide and got to be in more than an ocassion the unhearable center of the song. A very tight, gummy party sound( most of the time people just feel moved by the sound behind without knowing it's the bass itself ) But that doesn't mean they're the best basses in the world... just that they were the ones from the songs.
There are tons of reasons why players choose them, but It's not only the bass... It's all the equipment you carry along with the bass: amps, cabs, EQ, effects and others wich put in the player's hands the power to make it sound. Hands which can make it sound different from other ones...
Louis Jhonson worked, among many other artists, with Michael Jackson... It's just a lesson listening to him play in Off The wall record who had many disco oriented tracks!. I just can't think It would've been better with another bass cuz that tone was so damn disco and tight! But He use his slap and pop tech in a Thriller track called "The lady in my life" that's far away from being dico-funk or something like that... It was a sweet love balad! The distintive clear and tight pop sound was perfect for that end ( I posted it before in the topic Which covers do you think the band sholud play? cuz I remember you using a MM and I'd like to prove that a bass player could play what the track need but in order to do that, he needs a bass he feels comfortable and the right for it, besides it's a beautiful song heheh ) Reminds me of Falling
What I meant with all of this: There is a common notion on which basses are "funky" and which not, I recognize It's true. Some basses you can't get what you want with and some basses are just great for many musical situations ( Fender is- to me -one of the best and more used basses on eath ) but It's not necessary impositve! Having the right thing, The real groove comes from inside.
I'll venture myself saying that you might've been playing a MM on Little L (Funkiest intro to date- congartulations!! )and Cosmic Girl, for They're disco songs and the way you performed it also I think You used something like a EH Q-tron... of course I can be way too far from the truth .
Keep up this excellent work and hope to see u again in South America!
All the best!
Keep groovin' |
