Beatles - Love
'Beatles as you've never heard them before'

... at least that's what the ads say here in the UK.

I've always been a big Beatles-Fan. I've been listening to the album all day long now. Yes, a couple of the songs have been re-worked and all the songs have been re-mastered. But in the end I really do think, it's just a way to squeeze a bit more money out of the Beatles-Merchandise...

... what do you guys think?

I haven't listened to it yet. I was planning to buy it both for me and my mum. But I'm not too happy about what I've read so far. I guess it'd be interesting to hear what Sir George has been up to... but like you said, I have a feeling it's just another quick way of squeezing more money out of the Beatles thing.

Another way of squeezing money out of The Beatles? Well I never. Here was me thinking it was all done for the love of the art...

I've not listened to it and I don't really intend to... if it was a case of dusting off old tapes and releasing a compilation of the band's biggest songs as they were originally intended, before they went to the studio for editing, I'd be into it. But taking the strings from 'Eleanor Rigby' and sticking them into 'Drive My Car' (or whatever)? Can't really see the point, personally.

No doubt some of it sounds good and some not so good, but I'll stick with the originals myself. Besides, they went so overboard with use of stereo that I can't put any but the earliest songs onto my mp3 player anyway... if only there was a way of ripping tracks in mono instead!

I don't really see the point in it myself. I've never been a massive Beatles fan. I think their back-catalogue is 40% sheer genius and 60% sheer garbage. When they got it right they really got it right, but man when they got it wrong they got it wrong. You can hear them experimenting a lot and sometimes it doesn't work. However, that's what makes them a great band, because they were not afraid to push the boundaries and try new things. If they hadn't been messing around and experimenting they'd never have come up with the great stuff. I would never say they were not a good band, nor would I deny their influence on popular music. They're just not as great, IMO, as a lot of people think. There was a TON of soul and funky jazz coming out of places like New-Orleans, Deroit etc at the same time which was "as good" or "better", but that was largely ignored by mainstream America (for dubious reasons) and never exported to Europe. As Samiroquai says, I don't really want to hear a Beatles Megamix. I've got most of the old back catalogue anyway and that'll do if I want to listen to any tracks. There's a lot to be said for a band being in the right place at the right time. Laughing Cool

Oh and Sam, you can rip the tracks and then convert them to mono easily enough. PM me if you want the details Smile

Yeah, too true funkydonkey, Greatest Hits all over the place and horrible compilation albums with the same songs but a different title.
I still don;t know if this beatles album is any good or not. I know what I said before, but, I'll probably give it a listen anyway just out of curiosity. Laughing

Quote:

An Experience in Creation…
As Music Directors for LOVE, Sir George Martin and his son Giles Martin are at the epicenter of a revolution in the musical legacy of The Beatles. Using the master tapes at Abbey Road Studios, the Martins have spent the last two years constructing the music for LOVE by combining every facet of The Beatles recordings.

How hard was it to choose the songs that would become a part of LOVE?
Sir George Martin: "One of the challenges of the job was getting the balance of the songs right. We wanted to make sure there are enough good, solid hit songs in the show, but we don't want it to be a catalog of 'best of's'. We also wanted to put in some interesting and not well-known Beatles music and use fragments of songs."

What would you say was the greatest challenge you faced with LOVE?
Giles Martin: "Our mission was to try and achieve the same intimacy we get when listening to the master tapes at the studio. The songs sound so alive!"

...And Sound!
The panoramic sound experience in the custom built theatre will be the closest anyone will get to hearing the band play live again and the closest anyone can get to actually being in the studios with them.

How would you describe the experience of LOVE?
Giles Martin: A lot of people listen to The Beatles in a conventional way (radio, MP3 Player or car, for example) but never in such a space. With the huge amount of speakers in the theatre, I think we will achieve a real sense of drama with the music, the audience will feel as though they are actually in the room with the band. People are going to be knocked out by what they are hearing!"

Using the techniques that Sir George Martin pioneered in the sixties, linked to the best technology today, Sir George and Giles have created a unique, groundbreaking soundscape of original Beatles music for the show. Each listener will be immersed in the world of The Beatles.

I listened to this Love. It's been a lot of time since I listened to my Beatles's recordings and this load of hits came in my hears after a big acid jazz time.

First thing to say: the Beatles's tracks are always amazing, I cronically use to listem to their records and it's time to do it again (marketing Love's target hit Smile ). Nowere Man is one of my all time fav.

About this work
:

Very good remasters, you can absolutely hear the improvement.

...but...

very stupid and unuseful mash-ups (the strings of A day in a Life on Get Back suck!) and still I can't understand those dream-like intros between the tracks, they're a cacophony like those made up by John Lennon in his most awful genius times...bah!
