Jay Kay's voice
Hi all,

I have just discovered the wonderful music of Jamiroquai! I have spent the last two weeks gorging on every Jamiroquai recording on the web that I can find. (I finally get the point of YouTube.) Any of the live recordings, in particular, are brilliant.

Jay Kay's voice on the early stuff like EOPE and the Citta Club is impressive. On some of the more recent stuff though his voice sounds strained, even, dare I say it, off-key. I'm just kicking myself that I didn't realize how brilliant they were 10 years ago. My question is this - can you actually ruin your voice permanently from smoking, drugs and alcohol? Is it fixable? (And if it is, can we get up a petition to stop Jay smoking?!)

glad u discovered them!!!! u won´t regret Very Happy
talking about his voice...i am afraid he is responsible for what he is doing for or to it and we cannot influence that lol...

i hope he takes care of himself (especially his voice)..also if it is not like it was earlier..it will always be special.

Hi Zilali, welcome!

About the voice...yes, I think it's well known that smoking is not exactly a good thing for your voice. But there have been concerts in the last, say 5 years, that his voice didn't sound that good, but other times it did! It could also be a common cold, a busy/stressy tour, etc.

Thanks for the replies.

It is good to hear that Jay's voice is 'variable' rather than completely gone. I guess he is nearly 40...if he hasn't figured out how to take care of it by now, it is a lost cause.

He has fame and fortune so maybe he is just enjoying the ride these days! Smile

Oh Zilali!!

You're so lucky!! Still have plenty of things to discover from this band!!

Welcome aboard!!!

And yes, Jay's hard life made him lose his voice a little bit.

According to him, he tried singing it with his normal voice, but he didn't like it, so he used a 'falsetto' in that song.

Still... it sounds digitally modified.

Don't see how "feel just like it should" sounds like crap Confused. Sometimes artis try to say something on a track, a record is not tight just when the keyboardist does a 10 min solo, or when the bassist lays the funkiest b-line :/

Hate to say it, but I think it's quite a lot.
Get out your EOPE album and listen to how effortless something like Whatever It Is... sounds. If he tried to do that today, I think his head might explode!

Probably a combination of a few things - age, smoking, snorting...

Here's some info I just found:
Quote:
Cocaine will, over even a short amount of time (1-2 months) begin to thicken a persons vocal chords or larnx. Surface cell changes to this organ can be seen by an ENT doctor.

Thickening of vocal chords will in addition, alter ones natural voice. Usually thickening will result in a raspy and airy sound in singing and eventually in ones speech because the contact surface of the vocal chords when they come together to produce sounds--has been toughened and altered.

There you go. Not sure if it's reversable, but that probably accounts for it.
